Some time ago, we had a very enjoyable trip fishing at an island off the coast of Thailand called Kho Si Chang. It's a relatively small island about 45 minutes by local ferry from the Thai mainland.

My son, Daisuke, one of his friends, my daughter Mika and I joined a group and traveled off to try our hand with the rods. This required an early wake up call at 4:30am for 5:10am pickup. It's funny looking at people at this time of the morning. Some handle it better than others.

Hiro-san, a family friend, drove, while the rest of us dozed on the road trip to Si Racha. This was our take-off point for Kho Si Chang.

The cost of the ferry is 40B and it was fairly basic machine. Very noisy and the atmosphere inside the cabin was extremely oppressive. Hot and cramped is an understatement. Still, we must take in the full experience!

After arriving at Koh Si Chang, we had to arrange a few things like bait, food and drinks. Our destination was a pontoon out on the ocean somewhere, so we had to be a bit self reliant. After locating our next mode of transport, a small boat, we pushed on to our final destination.

The weather was extremely hazy which last to well into the morning. The temperature was comfortable, with a small hint of a breeze to keep it so. The pontoon itself, was a good size, and had a basic toilet for those in need.

With anticipation we all plunged straight into the chore at hand. Catching fish! Almost immediately, our first catch of the day. Somewhat disappointing in size, but it made for a great start. This went on for several hours. A few decent size fish, but still the big one eluded us. One of our new friends caught the best sized fish of the day. I don't know what is was, but it was definitely the biggest. They decided to cut it up straight away, and we enjoyed the freshest sushi I have ever eaten.

The day was so relaxing. No noise or hustle that you normally experience in Bangkok. Just about everyone had a small nap at some time during the day.

About 4:30pm, we started our journey back home. Small boat, ferry etc. The ferry from Koh Chang was much better than our first. Air conditioned. Well, freezing really. Too cold. And it had a TV blasting away with some type of Thai comedy. Didn't understand a thing, but the locals seemed to like it. This trip was also a bit slower. A trade off for the air-con?

We arrived at Si Racha wharf at about 6pm. Darkness had fallen, and the placed look very different. More bustling than in the morning. The drive back to Bangkok was uneventful.

We all talked of doing this again soon. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
